The WMF Facebook Feed
The West Marin Feed gained traction as a Facebook page and many of the local followers still find it there. Times have changed and Twitter has taken over as a better news medium, but WMF still posts on Facebook at least two or three times a week.

The best part about Facebook (if there is one) is that there is a lot of really good information that people are able to add to stories in the comments. Unfortunately, you have to go to the Facebook post itself to see these comments, they cannot be imported onto this feed.

The WMF team is back from traveling. First thing we noticed coming into town was this nice boat quietly nested north of White House Pool. Lost its mooring? Also sounds like I missed a sailing school water rescue this week in the bay. And a rat poison on the Farallons debate. Happy Fourth of July everyone. Remember, no fireworks allowed in West Marin today. We don't want any fires, especially with this wind.

Interesting perspective on Point Reyes from the NY Times this weekend. "Packing for a beach weekend on this Marin County peninsula isn't like packing for beach weekends back East. Yes, I always bring a bathing suit, maybe even a sundress, but I don't always wear them. Woolly hats and hoodies and hiking shoes, though? Every time. Point Reyes isn't for lazing in the sun (which is inevitably steamrollered by the fog anyway). It's for braving the cold of the Pacific, trekking through herds of tule elk and slurping barbecued oysters on Tomales Bay. And on a rare superhot, Cape Cod-level-crowded Saturday: trying to find your friends, sans cell service, for sunset on Limantour's endless stretch of sand.

Who goes there: Yoga-bending and bay-swimming retirees; couples who consider kayaking more romantic than wine tasting; and families who've owned creaky cabins for generations."

I posted a photo of 'black mountain' yesterday and called it 'elephant mountain' (based on a discussion with a local resident). People corrected me in the comments so I did a little research. From the very active and informative Sparsely, Sage and Timely blog, "Mary Black Burdell was married to dentist Galen Burdell and was the daughter of rancher James Black of Nicasio. Black Mountain, which provides the backdrop for Point Reyes Station, is named after him. In 1961, the site of Black's ranch house was inundated by the completion of Nicasio Reservoir, but whenever the reservoir runs dry during droughts, the house's foundation can still be seen on the western shore." Anyone know where the name 'elephant mountain' came from? What about 'knuckle mountain'? FULL BLOG POST: http://www.sparselysageandtime...

Sadly, this show is already sold out, but you can watch the trailer which I highly recommend. "Ramblin' Jack Elliott is to Dylan what Cassady was to Kerouac: a fountainhead for countless followers and admirers for whom he is proof that an authentic, self-invented life is possible. This film is the story of Jack's life as seen by Jack himself, documented over four years by friend and filmmaker Oleg Harencar. Jack recounts his life through numerous stories of sailing ships, adventures and an incredible entourage of friends and acquaintances. We follow Jack in his element, be it on horseback or minding a sail, hanging with ordinary folks as well as demigods of politics, the arts and music."

Another tragic story. The beaches are dangerous. "On Saturday, May 04, 2019, at approximately 10:54 AM, 9-1-1- was contacted reporting a male subject, who had been fishing with friends in the area of South Beach, inside the Point Reyes National Seashore-West Marin, had possibly drowned. Reportedly the subject was digging for sand crabs alone on the beach with his back facing the water when he was presumably struck by a wave, which knocked the subject into the water. The subject did not have a personal flotation device (PFD) in place and had been wearing bib-style fishing waders, which filled with water preventing his return to the shoreline. The subject's friends having returned to the beach from the parking area a short time later, discovered the subject floating face down unresponsive in the surf. Attempts to rescue the subject met with negative results. A United States Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter in the area completing unrelated training was immediately diverted to the scene in addition to other multiple First Responder agency personnel to render aid and complete a rescue of the subject. A USCG Rescue Swimmer was deployed from the helicopter and brought the subject to the shoreline, who remained unconscious and lifeless. Emergent resuscitative medical aid including CPR was immediately administered. Due to the remote area, the subject was then airlifted to the Point Reyes Beach South Parking area, where the subject was met by awaiting paramedics. Paramedics provided additional resuscitative medical aid to no avail. Despite the aforementioned efforts, the subject's death was pronounced on the scene at 12:04 PM."
