The WMF Facebook Feed
The West Marin Feed gained traction as a Facebook page and many of the local followers still find it there. Times have changed and Twitter has taken over as a better news medium, but WMF still posts on Facebook at least two or three times a week.

The best part about Facebook (if there is one) is that there is a lot of really good information that people are able to add to stories in the comments. Unfortunately, you have to go to the Facebook post itself to see these comments, they cannot be imported onto this feed.

A nice holiday story: "A tiny shopping shuttle that has made a big difference to seniors in rural communities including Point Reyes Station and Inverness got a new lease on life this week as Marin transit officials renewed grant funding. Kathy Hart of Point Reyes Station told transit officials the shopping shuttle has been life changing for her and others, including a man she said emerged from virtual seclusion to join others on shuttle trips."

News about Kent Lake. Why is this West Marin news? Because Nicasio Reservoir is drained when Kent Lake gets to a low level. Unfortunately, Nicasio doesn't provide water for thirsty people or crops in Nicasio or make it's way to Point Reyes, it is pumped up over the hill to quench East Marin's homes and lawns. Nevertheless, we all tend to use a quick glimpse of the Nicasio Reservoir as an assessment of our state of drought. Here is the news via Jean Berensmeier and her son Paul:
Tina and I just came back from running up to the Kent Lake spillway. Our timing was perfect. We actually got to see the water spill over the lip of the spillway! I've never been there at exactly that time! The big moment occurred at 8am. I took pictures to document this exciting event (first time in four years!).

Eric Ettlinger, MMWD Aquatic Ecollogist
The third week of December is typically the mid-point of the coho spawning run on Lagunitas Creek. Spawner survey results before mid-December don't typically mean much in terms of predicting the season's coho run, but at this point I can let myself start feeling hopeful or worried about the season total. So with five weeks of surveys behind us, how do I feel about this year's coho run? In a word, disappointed. To date we've seen 51 coho redds, which is somewhat below average, and predicts a season total in the neighborhood of 150 redds. That total would rank in the bottom third of runs over the last 18 years, in a year when abundant rain has allowed coho to spawn wherever and whenever they want, unlike some past years. It may be that this week will mark a sharp upswing in coho spawning activity, but for now things don't look encouraging.

On a more positive note, we continue to see relatively large numbers of Chinook and chum salmon in the creek. To date we've counted 22 Chinook redds, which matches the pace of the big Chinook run of 2004-05, when we saw 125 Chinook and 44 redds. In the case of chum, "relatively large numbers" means three fish, but these few fish continue to be fascinating. Last week we again saw a male chum attempting to spawn with a female Chinook. In this instance the male had taken on the coloration of a female chum, with a solid, dark bar running the length of the fish (photo here <> ). We weren't fooled, however, because he was on a redd with an obviously female Chinook and his pattern of worn scales indicated that he had been fighting, not building a redd. Interestingly, it's been many years since we've seen a chum salmon displaying the bold purple and black stripes of spawning males. Maybe they only dress up like that in the presence of other males.

It looks like rain and high flows will keep us out of the creek for at least the next few days, if not all week. Hopefully coho are surging upstream as I write this.

Went down town PR. It looked like a normal to heavier, rainy winter day to me...except businesses were closed, closing early etc. Is this due to the storm, or storm hype? Or is it just that the out of town "local" work force can't get here to run the town?

From Supervisor Susan Adams: URGENT ALERT: Prepare for high winds and rain

Nasty storm coming our way Wednesday and Thursday

The County has been out clearing and performing maintenance in anticipation of the winter storm season; it's time for all of us to secure our own space! Take a look around your home now to make sure your flashlights and batteries are working, you have water and emergency food, and that your gutters, drains and culverts are clean and working. Check drainage pipes, and trim precarious branches if you can. If you live near a storm drain, please help to make sure leaves are not covering the grate and that street gutters are clear. The coming storm is projected to bring heavy rain and wind, power outages are possible. Sounds like it will be wild out there with wind and rain! Remember to drive safely on Thursday, or better yet, if you don't have to be on the roads - stay home!
