The WMF Facebook Feed
The West Marin Feed gained traction as a Facebook page and many of the local followers still find it there. Times have changed and Twitter has taken over as a better news medium, but WMF still posts on Facebook at least two or three times a week.

The best part about Facebook (if there is one) is that there is a lot of really good information that people are able to add to stories in the comments. Unfortunately, you have to go to the Facebook post itself to see these comments, they cannot be imported onto this feed.

"Smiley's Schooner Saloon in Bolinas, the oldest business in Marin County, has a new owner, Leila Monroe, a 35-year-old San Francisco lawyer, the first woman in its colorful, 163-year history. That's the news in this happily isolated coastal hamlet, ending months of rumor and speculation, but it isn't the story. The story is that in a town famously mistrustful of outsiders, no one is calling her a carpetbagger. Quite the opposite, in fact."

Here is some incredible video shot last night by Aaron Ely of the Point Reyes Youth Hostel fire: "A special thanks to Jim Fox who stood guard in our tinder box of a leech field and called up some reinforcements to help with the embers. He had to race out the door while cooking his dinner at home."

A shot of the brush fire in Point Reyes by the youth hostel this evening. The winds were heavy and the local firefighters and NPS did an incredible job putting it out quickly. That could have been ugly.

 Monday, November 17 ,2014 at 9:57pm
Via Fiona O'Kelly: "It's a brush fire caused by a downed power line on the left hillside between the Youth Hostel and the Clem Miller Center. Julia and I went down there and talked to the responders on scene, who were waiting for PG&E to arrive to shut off power so that they could begin fighting it. They weren't too worried, and no structures (meaning Clem Miller Center, Laguna lot houses, or youth hostel) were immediately threatened. As Julia and I were leaving about 5 minutes ago, PG&E arrived on scene, which means that soon they can begin putting it out. I will say that my heart rate has been up around 130 bpm for the past hour or so. DAMN scary."
 Monday, November 17 ,2014 at 9:42pm
Someone just reported a lot of sirens headed out to Limantour Beach, maybe a brush fire, anyone have details?
 Monday, November 17 ,2014 at 8:28pm
Marin county and Inverness fire units along with park rangers are responding to a vegetation fire near the youth hostel. The hostel is not threatened at the moment but has been evacuated. Fire personnel are awaiting the arrival of PG&E to cut power to downed power lines before they can knock down the fire, which is about 1/4 - 3/4 acre with a slow rate of spread.
 Monday, November 17 ,2014 at 8:14pm
Fire engines, ambulances, and rangers have been screaming down Limantour for the past 15-20 minutes. Does anybody know what's going on?

Legislation giving Marin County the first crack at acquiring surplus Coast Guard quarters in Point Reyes for affordable housing was introduced Wednesday by San Rafael Rep. Jared Huffman.

Under Huffman's "Point Reyes Coast Guard Housing Conveyance Act," the 22-acre Coast Guard complex, up for sale at a federal auction next year, would instead be sold to the county at fair market value as determined by an appraiser "based on the use required by this act."

Flashback: On July 22, 2008 I happen to be coming down Balboa Ave. when they were moving the Orthodox Church, piece by piece, from the site where the 'Pandora' compound is being debated.
 Tuesday, November 11 ,2014 at 10:12pm
Apparently this isn't the first time the 'Pandora' architect, Tom Kundig, has had some controversy with his work:

"Descriptions of the cabin by opponents in interviews for this story, on a Facebook page and in local media have included "an extended third finger," a "boil," a "blight" and a "wart" to a Mazama area that has no "ridgebuster" dwellings atop hills."

For those of you not familiar with the story, it's really starting to get some media traction, here is coverage on Valleywag and SFGate:

"Deputies in the Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter rescued a 55-year-old woman Friday from the Point Reyes National Seashore after she fell off a horse, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. The accident occurred in an area with limited vehicle and emergency resource access. The Henry 1 crew found the 55-year-old woman with a National Park Ranger, who was assisting her, on a trail surrounded by a dense canopy of trees, deputies said."

I heard there was quite a reaction to the Tim Setnicka talk about the ranches at Santa Rosa Island and how the ending of their lease could mean troubled waters ahead for Point Reyes. If you would like to hear the talk yourself, along with a variety of comments from the public which, as Katie Eberle said, reflect the variety of thinking around our community, the show is archived on KWMR's website, here: http://shar.es/10wiaw. Thank you to KWMR for collaborating with those of us who volunteer at the Community Media Center of Marin.

Support your local community radio, we're very fortunate to have such an incredible resource available to all of us.

Have to give some kudos to my nightshift deputies. Early this past Saturday morning we received a burglar alarm at the Rancho Nicasio well after midnight. The suspect(s) used a can a white paint to break out a front window and entered searching for their loot.

Deputies responding to the alarm stopped an SUV leaving the area and found 2 young men, students from Drake High School with white paint on their shoes. At least both admitted to their crimes after a few vain attempts at lying to the deputies.

Both were arrested and booked into Juvenile Hall for their failed attempt as criminals.

Best,

A true sign of the times...deputies patrolling in Bolinas late last night discovered that Giant spirit is alive and well as some Halloween goblins are off to an early start showing their loyalty by making a few minor adjustments to the CalTrans electronic warning signs in town.

Don't think we'll start much if an investigation into this big capper

Found Dog by visitor to Pt. Reyes - photo of dog on Commons Connect Forum West Marin Share

Beagle mix? Male. Adult - perhaps 8-11 years old? Extremely friendly - jumped straight into my car and curled up on my lap for cuddles! No collar but looks like he had the fur dent that there may have been one there at some point.
I took him to the fire department in Point Reyes and they sent me to the Sheriffs office. They were going to try and make contact with the humane society or animal control. So I guess ask them to contact the Sheriff's office and then they can find out where he went??
I have attached a picture Thanks again, Laura

Inverness squatters evicted. The mice living in my Prius may be heading to your car. Beware. I was left with over $5,000 in damages to engine wires, the heating system, etc. Fortunately, my car insurance covered most of this. Surprisingly, dryer sheets placed under your hood will deter them. (In specific areas that won't ignite!)

Also, I participated in the ongoing CHP fundraising event. I opted for the traffic school prize and am curious about the $52 fee (in addition to my generous donation to the online traffic school of my choice). Any ideas?
