The WMF Facebook Feed
The West Marin Feed gained traction as a Facebook page and many of the local followers still find it there. Times have changed and Twitter has taken over as a better news medium, but WMF still posts on Facebook at least two or three times a week.

The best part about Facebook (if there is one) is that there is a lot of really good information that people are able to add to stories in the comments. Unfortunately, you have to go to the Facebook post itself to see these comments, they cannot be imported onto this feed.

Nice article on Jack Kornfield, local spiritual legend, in the NY Times magazine this weekend. "Whether or not the latest wave of self-helping meditators or corporate practitioners of "˜mindfulness' know it, the spiritual enlightenment sweeping America has strong ties to Buddhism, thanks in part to one huggable ex-monk in California."

They're also having a party today from 4pm - 8pm at their bakery in downtown Point Reyes (by the Commons) to celebrate. Food, drink and oysters! Be sure to check out the campaign and the party!!!!

For traffic, road safety, speed traps, etc., I think it would be great if local folks would consider using the Waze app (this is just a personal recommendation for which I receive nothing in return) -- it seems to have a nice feature set -- it is like social media for drivers, and one can get updates without being at the computer...

Heya, Friends. Sharron Drake and I have reunited as Mad Marmalade and want to share news of a local night of music we're hosting at the Coast Cafe in Bolinas alternating Sunday Nights 6-8pm (Oct 19th, Nov 2nd, Nov 16th, etc). We'll be regularly sharing the "stage" with friends/musicians from West Marin and beyond, so you'll find something different each time. There's no cover charge, and kids are most welcomed. We'll also be collecting food for a food drive, passing it on to the West Marin Food Bank, so bring a non-perishable or 2 if you like. Hope to see you there!

The SF Chronicle weighs in on the elk issue. "But there isn't much celebrating going on in the picturesque hills, where elk can regularly be seen loping proudly through pastures that seven organic dairies use for their cattle. The wild elk and domestic cows simply do not mix, according to the ranchers who lease the fields from the National Park Service, which administers 28,000 acres of agricultural land in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes seashore. The ranchers say the competition from the elk for scarce vegetation threatens their very existence after three years of drought."

An interesting resource is Transparent California, a free website which compiles compensation data for a variety of public sector employees. The California Policy Center, a nonpartisan think tank operates the database.

The site also allows users to search and download detailed employee compensation figures for superintendents, teachers, principals and other staff members at school districts across the state.

The school district data is located at http://transparentcalifornia.c...agencies/salaries/school-districts/">http://transparentcalifornia.c... and the main database at http://transparentcalifornia.c... .

New Chapter For Drakes Bay Oyster Company
Historic Farm Settles Federal Lawsuit
Agrees To End Oyster Farming In Drakes Estero
Will Be Opening Restaurant Specializing In Local Shellfish, Will Remain In Oyster Distribution

San Francisco"”Drakes Bay Oyster Company, a historic family-owned oyster farm in West Marin County, today announced it has settled its long-running lawsuit against the federal government. The legal agreement with the National Park Service, filed today, will allow the company to keep harvesting oysters until the end of 2014.

"We fought long and hard all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Along the way we stood up for family farms, for sustainable food, and for scientific integrity in government," said Drakes Bay Oyster Company co-owners Joe, Kevin and Bob Lunny.

"At the end of the day, although we lost this battle, it was important for us to be a voice for justice for family farms," the Lunnys added. "But we also respect the rule of law. Even though we believe we were right, as good and law-abiding Americans, we accept this decision and will now move on to other things."

The Lunnys also have good news to announce. Having fallen in love with the sustainability, ecological contributions, and food value of oysters, the Lunnys are planning a new venture: Drakes Oyster House, a restaurant to be located at the Tomales Bay Resort in Inverness, California.

In addition, because restaurant owners recognize the Lunny's commitment to quality and service, Drakes Bay will also continue distributing oysters. Hundreds of restaurants and markets around the San Francisco Bay Area will still be able to depend on Drakes Bay for their shellfish needs.

"This new venture will allow us to continue to provide jobs for many of our oyster workers while supporting other small family farms and fishermen in West Marin County," said Kevin Lunny. "We are delighted that we will be able to continue to offer bags of oysters to our cherished Drakes Bay retail customers. And we are very excited about the opportunity to serve oysters and other fabulous local food at this stunning location on the water, with dining and decks overlooking beautiful Tomales Bay." Tomales Bay Resort owner Jeff Harriman said "I am thrilled to have the Lunnys bring the restaurant component to our 5 acre, 35 room Resort and Marina."

In the settlement agreement, the farm will be allowed to continue harvesting oysters until the end of the year. The National Park Service wants the oyster farm's operations ended, and so the Park Service will be taking responsibility for removing all of the oyster-farming equipment and structures remaining in Drakes Estero. The Park Service has also pledged to provide relocation assistance to the company's workers. The settlement agreement has been submitted to the federal district court for its formal approval.

"We'd like to thank our many friends and supporters, starting with Senator Dianne Feinstein and Marin County Supervisor Steve Kinsey. We are especially grateful for our employees, many of whom we hope will keep working with us as we move forward," the Lunnys said.
