The WMF Facebook Feed
The West Marin Feed gained traction as a Facebook page and many of the local followers still find it there. Times have changed and Twitter has taken over as a better news medium, but WMF still posts on Facebook at least two or three times a week.

The best part about Facebook (if there is one) is that there is a lot of really good information that people are able to add to stories in the comments. Unfortunately, you have to go to the Facebook post itself to see these comments, they cannot be imported onto this feed.

Meteors are flying in the skies tonight and tomorrow night. The bad news is that the bright supermoon is interfering with this year's 2014 Perseid display, washing out all but the brighter Perseid meteors on the peak nights of August 11-12 and August 12-13 (we give the nod to the night of August 12-13). The good news is that, according to NASA, the Perseids have more fireballs "“ or bright meteors "“ than any other annual meteor shower.

With the closure of Drakes Bay Oyster Company retail operations, the next step is cleaning up the debris and jettisoned farming equipment in Drakes Estero.

Here are a few underwater videos shot by a local resident, showing the trash left behind, and the invasive "marine vomit" known as Didemnum vexillum which comes with non-native oyster farming:

Huge show tonight in Point Reyes. Local musical hero Jesse DeNatale performs with very special guests Jonathan Richman and Tommy Larkin. Music starts at 7 p.m. at Toby's Feed Barn, in Point Reyes Station. Tickets are available for a $20 donation at the door and in advance at or by calling Toby's at (415) 663.1223. A raffle and silent auction will be held during the evening; doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Here is a video of Jonathan Richman and his band, The Modern Lovers, which recorded the legendary 'Roadrunner' in 1972. And I don't say legendary lightly. Don't miss it.

Well. I was trying avoid DBOC talk this week but signs are getting spray painted, emotions are running high and there is quite a brouhaha breaking out over at the Point Reyes Light FB page. Apparently half the Point Reyes Ranchers Association resigned recently in response to the handling of a letter to Cicely Muldoon.
The resignation letter is posted there along with a full explanation (see the comments on the post). Would love to hear what else people know about this because it probably won't be published in either of the local papers (or at least it hasn't yet from what I can tell).

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Point Reyes National Seashore and Muir Woods National Monument generated about one-third of the overall $1.5 billion visitors spent in association with national parks in California in 2013."

"On August 5, 1973, Park Ranger Kenneth Patrick was shot and killed while making a traffic stop at Point Reyes National Seashore, California. The vehicle that he stopped contained several members of a militant group, known as the Black Panthers. One of the men opened fire on Ranger Patrick with a 9 mm handgun as he approached the car, wounding him. Ranger Patrick was wearing a winter coat and was unable to draw his weapon.

From the police reports this week. Wild baby pig? Lost baby pig? Dangerous baby pig? Reminds me of rabbit sketch from Monty Python's The Holy Grail:
Sir Robin: What's he do? Nibble your bum?
Tim: He's got huge, sharp... er... He can leap about. Look at the bones!
King Arthur: Go on, Bors. Chop his head off!
Sir Bors: Right! Silly little bleeder. One rabbit stew comin' right up!

"Allies of Drakes Bay Oyster Co. announced Friday they had secured an agreement with the National Park Service to give the embattled Marin County oyster farm 30 days' notice before ordering it to shut down operations in the Point Reyes National Seashore.
The agreement "ensures the status quo," enabling oysterman Kevin Lunny's company to continue harvesting oysters until a competitor, Tomales Bay Oyster Co., can get its case before a federal judge, possibly in September, said Stuart Gross, a San Francisco attorney representing Tomales Bay."
